ABSTRACT

The chapter acknowledges that Maharashtra has been the birthplace of many social reforms and progressive movements. However, politics is still a male domain. The chapter discusses women's political participation in the Lok Sabha, the Rajya Sabha, and the state legislature and explains how the politics of accommodation changed into stiff party politics, leaving hardly any space for women to become major actors. However, women's movement in the state and the Women's Policy introduced in 1990 considerably changed the political equations.
