ABSTRACT

This chapter does a gender analysis of women's political participation in Haryana. Tracing the history of women in political life since the creation of the state of Haryana till 2019 when the last elections were held to the state assembly the chapter does an analysis of the reasons for the absence of any meaningful contribution by women. The presence of very few women in decision-making bodies at all levels reflects the patriarchal nature of the region. Although in terms of numbers, women are well represented because of reservations at the grassroots, this does not necessarily translate into their increased political participation. Even today the political field is considered a male domain and all important decisions are made by men. Most of the women who have joined politics have done so because of family considerations, pressure from the family, and various other factors. Women's education has in no way impacted their participation in decision-making.
