ABSTRACT

Jails and prisons across the United States are the new asylums for individuals with intellectual and mental health challenges. Individuals with intellectual and mental health challenges often find it difficult to adjust to incarceration. These populations represent a unique challenge to correctional staff in prisons and jails because of inadequate training and limited resources. This chapter examines the specific challenges of housing individuals with intellectual and mental health challenges in correctional settings, including jails, prisons, and segregated housing units. We also offer policy recommendations to improve the services these populations receive.
