ABSTRACT

Housing individuals who identify as transgender in a correctional setting comes with a unique set of circumstances. If the individual is transitioning, they have a specific set of medical needs that must be addressed. In addition, placement determinations have been controversial. This question centers around whether a placement decision should be made based on the individual's assigned sex at birth, gender identification, or current sex identity. This chapter reviews laws and policies across the United States regarding the placement and treatment of transgender individuals in institutional correctional settings. The chapter also reviews the current literature on the topic and provides a discussion of policy implications.
