ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses how Meta intervenes in many problems of contemporary journalism and unravels its implications on critical media literacy in higher education. In so doing, it problematizes the Meta Journalism Project, which involves various community networks, journalists, news organizations, and higher education institutions, which ultimately helps legitimize the tech giant's exploitative data extraction and monetization practices. Specifically, the chapter focuses on three discernible yet interlinked goals that MJP serves: A buffer against criticism and regulation, an ambassador for its monetization scheme, and a co-optation tool to subsume major institutions into platform capitalism. After all, Meta's bold vision of recuperating journalism will have pernicious effects on critical media literacy and higher education while blocking fundamental journalistic reforms that would serve the best interests of radical democracy.
