ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the value of specific elements within Augusto Boal's Theater of the Oppressed [TO] as a scaffold to introduce students to critical media literacy (CML) and reinforce key CML concepts. Boal's work is uniquely positioned to promote CML pedagogy in two basic ways. First, it is created and guided by Freirean principles of emancipatory education. Second, ample pedagogical opportunities may encourage students to explore CML concepts through multimodal pedagogies within the Theater of the Oppressed arsenal. Furthermore, Boal's work can aid critical educators in delivering engaging, critical, and transformative learning experiences. This chapter also provides specific examples of how TO exercises complement CML core concepts and further develop a transformative CML pedagogy.
