ABSTRACT

News is a morphing genre in the digital environment. Vast changes in how news and information are defined and used in the current media environment are challenging and promising. For anyone to address, act on, and make significant social change, they must successfully exploit information production and circulation on the media environment's terms. This requires that they grasp the human environment currently operating by the logic of digital communication. What the digital environment makes possible; what it constrains; the forms of power, values, and worldviews it supports; and in which geographic and cultural contexts are the interrelated cultural components operating in each media environment, and they dictate media content produced and circulating therein. A Dynamic Model of Media Environments is a necessary tool for media literacy education and understanding the digital environment, specifically the practices of news and information.
