ABSTRACT

This chapter contains an explanation of the typical organisation of psychiatric services in the UK. It looks to explain the roles of different teams, including crisis intervention services, community mental health services, rehabilitation services and assertive outreach teams, as well as how they have come about. The chapter includes information on the care plan approach, the mental health service national framework and the recovery approach.

This chapter also looks at medicolegal aspect of caring for individuals with mental health problems, including information on the Mental Capacity Act, deprivation of liberty safeguards, power of attorney, confidentiality and the Human Rights Act. It also includes some information about safeguarding vulnerable adults from abuse and the Care Act, as well as information about mental health and driving.

A final section provides information on other forms of treatment for mental health conditions including electroconvulsive therapy, repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation and psychosurgery.
