ABSTRACT

This chapter covers approaches to psychiatric disorders in older adults. When compared to people of working age, it is recognised that older adults with mental illness have a different epidemiological profile and differing set of risk factors. The approach to treatment must also be tailored to the needs of older people. With this in mind, the delivery of services must be targeted to the nuances of this population in order to optimise accessibility and provide the highest quality of care. It is also recognised that specific expertise is necessary to diagnose and support people with cognitive impairment. This chapter will outline the common types of dementia managed by older adult mental health services, taking in to account organic pathology which may complicate diagnosis.
