ABSTRACT

Psychological harassment, negative behaviors directed constantly and repeatedly to some people, is still a serious problem in workplace. The concept emerged in 1980s and with the advancement of interest in the phenomenon, many countries enacted laws against psychological harassment to prevent it. However, although the protection of employee rights emerged as an important issue in business life with the transformation through globalization and digitalization, a new form of psychological harassment through social media arose. In this chapter the individual and organizational antecedents of psychological harassment are discussed and they are connected to the modern working life. The chapter, also, clarifies the differences between psychological harassment and some similar concepts and makes clear the consequences of psychological harassment in organizational life. Lastly, the chapter discusses some practical recommendations to cope with the psychological harassment in organizations.
