ABSTRACT

Although research on the glass ceiling started several decades ago, researchers and practitioners continue to be interested in this phenomenon due to its significant negative consequences. The glass ceiling is one of the phenomena that constitutes the dark side of contemporary organizational behavior. Hence, this chapter aims to offer a comprehensive resource and reference guide for researchers who are interested in the glass ceiling, for organizational managers who are attempting to manage adverse circumstances in their companies, and for employees who are suffering from the glass ceiling effect to obtain in-depth knowledge about, increase their awareness of, and become more familiar with the concept. For this purpose, the “glass ceiling” is initially defined and explained. Then, the current global perceptions of the glass ceiling are investigated. Following this, the functioning of the glass ceiling is explained, and the glass ceiling in the 21st century is examined. Finally, discussions on how the glass ceiling can be shattered are made.
