ABSTRACT

Maya Krishna Rao is a well-known theatre artist and activist based in Delhi. Her solo performance The Walk first came together as a response to Jyoti Singh’s rape and murder. Since then, she has been invited to perform it numerous times in venues that range from protest sites, educational institutions and performance spaces. The Walk has become a formidable part of her theatrical oeuvre. Several of the most iconic performances of The Walk that we refer to in this interview are available on YouTube. 1 The Walk is a flexible, mobile piece that is typically about ten to twenty minutes in duration and is often adapted to audiences and concerns in addition to what is at the heart of The Walk.
