ABSTRACT

During the pandemic, television became essential while living in the confined space of home for lower-middle-class women. Lower-middle-class households relied on television for entertainment, general news, information on lockdowns, Covid-19 counts, Prime Minister addressing to the nation during the lockdowns. The excitement and nostalgia of these re-runs of old TV daily soaps series became essential in the time of pandemic to escape the miseries of the times through television consumption. The narratives of these women show how television consumption goes beyond the engagement with entertainment and merely passing the time during the lockdowns. For these women, television became a space to liberate themselves from the misery of life and a window to experience and relate to the ‘reel’ lives of women presented in the daily soaps.
