ABSTRACT

In the wake of the lockdown, as a technology of mass communication, television news acted as a medium, majorly focusing on the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic and its repercussions, further informing people about what was happening around them. Pandemic deaths were one of the hot topics. Given that television news is controlled, filtered and censored, how did television news deal with humanity’s one of the age-old conundrums, that is, death during the pandemic? How did television news channels portray the pandemic deaths? The primary intent of this chapter is to trace the history of pandemic deaths in India and how the arrival of television news as a technology of mass communication affected the shared experience of the public towards the notion of death during the pandemic in the context of India.
