ABSTRACT

Motivation plays a critical role in shaping health behaviour and an individual’s ability to achieve positive health. Through a comprehensive review of the theoretical frameworks and by drawing on the current evidence, this chapter establishes motivation as a central theme in the context of positive health. By examining how motivation interacts with other psychological constructs, we gain a deeper understanding of the complex interplay between the factors that shape health behaviour. First, we review definitions and concepts of motivation and the intrinsic and extrinsic factors that drive individuals and groups to adopt and sustain positive health behaviours. Second, we shed light on the evolution of theories of motivation and explore how an individual’s positive emotions, perceived confidence, autonomy, support, social norms, and agency can reciprocally influence motivation and actions, creating an upward spiral. Finally, we discuss the practical implications of understanding motivation in the context of health behaviour. By understanding the underlying motivational factors, health practitioners, health coaches, researchers, and individuals can design interventions that align with a persons’ unique motivation and goals, promoting sustainable positive health. In conclusion, this chapter outlines the significance of motivation as a central theme in health behaviour, leading to improved overall health and well-being.
