ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the meaning of differences in a therapeutic context and how differences may be understood and worked with through an intercultural psychodynamic framework. The chapter specifically draws on the importance of supervision from an intercultural perspective. Clients have different stories and backgrounds that they bring, similarly as practitioners, we also bring our own stories and histories. The chapter explores the function of intercultural therapy and its elucidation of working with differences and diversity within the intercultural supervision matrix. From my perspective as a supervisor, I advance my understanding of intercultural and psychodynamic psychotherapy in my work in therapy and supervision. I reference my experience as a supervisee and a trainee counsellor through case examples to highlight these themes in therapy and supervision.
