ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors present a case study of the new required course IEN 301 – Innovation and Entrepreneurship Mindset at the American University of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates, an international American-style liberal arts institution in the emirate of Sharjah near Dubai. The course focuses on design thinking, sustainability, innovation, and entrepreneurial marketing. Fedtke and Ibahrine argue that cultivating an entrepreneurial mindset in the arts and humanities as part of the university curriculum in an environment that traditionally privileges STEM fields and business will enable and motivate students to apply their social entrepreneurship skills in creating future jobs, solving pressing social issues, and building sustainable futures. Teaching an innovation mindset in the arts and humanities as part of the entrepreneurial university will eventually lead to necessary disruption in education, applied social innovation, and overall societal transformation.
