ABSTRACT

This chapter was presented at the ISPDI conference in Malibu, CA, and describes how the “soul’s logical life” manifested in the history of Western music. Beginning with plainchant through the development of a complex harmonic system, “how music thinks” addresses changes in the syntax of music, that is, the underlying structures and forms. In modern times, soul has both abandoned music and absconded with music into the media and digitization but has left a residue in the wake of its departure.
