ABSTRACT

Considering the challenges of optimal management of water resources in Africa, this chapter underscores the need to rationalise the legal frameworks of river basin organisations to address these s challenges. The chapter highlights the prospect of future threats to water protection and the intensification of conflicts of its use. In this regard, it stresses the need to have measures in place to ensure resilience to climate change or demographic growth that is compatible with the availability of water resources. Furthermore, the chapter recommends solutions to the organisational and functional weaknesses of river basin organisations, such as the absence of control mechanisms and the weaknesses of their funding models.
