ABSTRACT
When Winnicott started his analytic work he was strongly influenced by Klein’s emphasis on early psychic development. From the 1940s, he increasingly stressed the subjective infantile experiences undergone in the analytic-clinical situation. He began to explore pre-Oedipal states of mind, leading to conceptual innovations and a new terminology. In particular, he stressed the quality of emotional care provided by the actual mother.
