ABSTRACT

This chapter provides information regarding South African higher education crises as related to English as a medium of instruction. The case studies presented provide insights as to how the crisis can be addressed. The volume is of interest to anyone who teaches in higher education with English as the medium of instruction (EMI), though the case studies presented are based in South African higher education contexts. The case studies show how cultural and linguistic inclusivity are created. In order to address coloniality in the classroom, the curricula designed, prompt all participants to critically contemplate their own coloniality and the coloniality of others. This chapter provides the motivation for the volume, underpinning conceptual orientations, main themes, a description of the research methods and an outline of the chapters.
