ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with an introduction to the anatomy and typical functions of the pelvic floor, and details how these functions relate to a ‘female’ dancer’s daily life, training and performance. This chapter addresses the common symptoms that can occur in ‘female’ dancers when dysfunction arises, and how these symptoms are typically addressed. A discussion of potential contributing factors to dysfunction follows, allowing dancers to understand how both their general health and their movement strategies can impact the health and wellness of the pelvic floor. The chapter concludes by detailing considerations for specific pelvic floor concerns across the lifespan including pregnancy, the postpartum period, perimenopause and menopause, as well as considerations for transfeminine dancers.
