ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book explores the context within which the early Greek contacts were forged to explain the apparent obliviousness of Kolaios and the Samians to the Greek voyages that had gone before. It considers the recollections of Greek sailors in shaping memories of space to focus upon a specific example, namely Strabo's account of the settlement of Hemeroskopeion. The book surveys the presence of Greek imports along the Bay of Málaga to reconsider the relationship of Greek and Phoenician merchants and to suggest that the roots of the Greek settlement lay in an enclave – or emporion – within the Phoenician settlement at Málaga. It examines the phenomenon of piracy in the West and offers new insights into the (almost endemic) phenomenon of piracy in a new geographical setting.
