ABSTRACT

According to the Greek geographer Strabo, three very small Massiliot towns were established south of the río Sucro (3.4.6) – the region of ancient Contestania. The most famous of these was Hemeroskopeion situated on a promontory overlooking the sea and housing a temple of Artemis. Scholars have sought to locate these towns without success. Several sites in the vicinity of Montgó have yielded evidence of contact with the wider Mediterranean: most notably at Alt de Benimaquia, and a Phoenician enclave was established at the mouth of the río Segura at La Fonteta/La Rábita.
