ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how memetic literacy can be integrated with important linguistic concepts in the ELA classroom. First providing a brief summary of literature addressing memes and linguistic concepts, the chapter then provides examples from a Linguistics for Education course for preservice teachers illustrating how memes can be used to teach three key linguistic concepts: (1) semantic misunderstanding, (2) direct and indirect speech acts, and (3) sociolinguistic stereotypes. The chapter concludes with preservice teachers’ reflections on these assignments and their ideas for other meme-based assignments for ELA classrooms.
