ABSTRACT

The natives see us in quite a different way from how we see ourselves. That sounds trite but we should always bear it in mind in our dealings with them. They don’t consider us brave, clever, generous or civilized in any respect; they see us as nothing more than rogues. They don’t forget a single promise we have failed to keep. They don’t overlook a single corrupt official who is ostensibly employed to see our justice is done. They consider our manners repellent and, of course, we’re unbelievers. 2
