ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces you to developing and supporting young children's movement skills. Considerations regarding how much physical activity children need are explored in line with recommendations and potential barriers. The chapter defines and considers the importance of fine and gross motor skills, and fundamental movement skills, before sharing applied recommendations on movement observation / assessment and supporting development in early childhood settings. It is important to foster an environment in which physical development can thrive and this chapter discusses how to facilitate movement creativity, explores the use of feedback, and presents applied solutions to best support children's physical development, making links to Chapter 2.
