ABSTRACT

Every time a child moves, something is being learned about their bodies and how they work: about their physical relationship to each other and the environment; about concepts such as speed, distance, forces, friction, height, depth, weight, angles, direction; about mathematical ideas including space, shape, pattern; and about how non-verbal communication is used to effect positive outcomes. The chapter looks at how adults can properly support children's learning through movement. It also looks at how we can create the optimum environments that extend children's level of physical activity.
