ABSTRACT

Sexual identity and minority rights are not topics discussed widely in most places, even though they have a great impact on the conception of society. This chapter considers few discourses as they are presented in comics, specifically the ‘underground' comics of Katherine Supnem. Her work, distributed via zines and comics, attempts to influence Chilean society and open channels for debate. The chapter demonstrates the role of comics as a social influence by looking at some examples. Here the special role of self-publication and ‘underground' comics has to be stressed. The chapter also outlines theories of sexual identity and minority rights in relation to Chile. It then presents Supnem and her comics, their discussion of sexual identity, minority rights, and society. Today Chile is one of the richest but also one of the most unequal places in Latin America, with many indigenous people living in poverty.
