ABSTRACT

Hinduism is not a religion but a way of life with a deep structure of meaning, suggesting that conflict and change is built into the caste system. The evolution of Sri Guru Singh Sabha in Southall initially started quietly in 1958, as it has probably done at 140 other sites in the UK, with some members of the Sikh community meeting to form a ‘Satsang Sabha’, a cultural society. The members made a conscious decision to emerge from a silent cultural society and pick up the traditional reformative role of Sri Guru Singh Sabha with wider social, cultural and political implications. The community, and specifically the Sri Guru Singh Sabha, has, over the years, developed a strong active ‘link language’ with the Golden City of Amritsar, and the intensity of the Punjab/Amritsar connection has enabled the Sikhs of Southall to emerge as the most militant and attacking minority group in the United Kingdom.
