ABSTRACT

In June 1979, a delegate conference of affiliated and support organisations was called by the Scrap Sus Campaign. The conference held in Notting Hill was attended by 150 delegates from organisations throughout the country. An equally important effect of the campaign was to rally black parents around the need to support their children. An understanding and appreciation of the extent of police harassment assisted parents to recognise more that it was the police and injustice which were to blame, rather than be taken in by the propaganda which placed the blame on their children. Although the local group continued to be involved in local activities, from the day of launching of the Scrap Sus Campaign in February 1977 the role of the local group and the community worker changed. Inevitably it meant a doubling up of efforts both to support the local group and to support a national campaign.
