ABSTRACT

White racism is the cause of bad race relations. If relations between the black and white communities continue to deteriorate as a result of institutionalised racism condoned by state, the violent scenes of Southall, Bristol and Brixton could easily become commonplace, rendering the streets unsafe for white and black people alike. Training to enable white professionals to administer and implement these programmes and to equip workers in education, in social services and the health service to work in multi-racial areas, began to be included in basic and in-service training programmes. This training also ignored white racism, and served to perpetuate it through reinforcing the dominant ideology that black people needed help to recover from disadvantages they experienced. Course tutors responsible for the basic community work preparation, and agencies concerned with provision of in-service training, should be planning to incorporate anti-racist courses. This may involve full-time course tutors arranging training for themselves prior to incorporating Racism Awareness workshops on their courses.
