ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the book. It introduces some of the main ideas that are useful for leading a successful hybrid organisation in the post-COVID world. It examines the psychological and systemic factors that leaders must consider to effectively manage the transition to hybrid working. The author emphasises that success requires moving beyond ‘cookbook’ methods to take a deeper, first-principles approach grounded in contemporary management theory and social psychology. The chapter explores how people and organisations undergo change, drawing on Kurt Lewin’s ‘Force Field Analysis’ model of driving and restraining forces. It stresses the importance of trust between managers and employees, using McGregor’s Theory X and Theory Y frameworks. The downfall of Kodak is analysed as a case study in the critical role of leadership mindset and attachment to the past versus openness to new possibilities. Questions are provided to guide reflection on forces promoting and inhibiting change. The key takeaway is that an upgraded leadership mindset, rather than assumptions based on past experience, is imperative for thriving in the new hybrid reality. Readers will gain theoretical grounding and practical analytical tools to understand their organisation’s dynamics and consciously lead a successful evolution.
