ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses personality psychology and how it relates to leading a hybrid organisation. Employees’ attitudes towards returning to work after working from home during the pandemic are heavily influenced by their personalities. The author introduces the big five academic model of personality, which divides personality into five factors: openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness and neuroticism. A self-assessment allows readers to assess their own personality. The chapter then examines how each of the big five influences an individual’s attitude towards hybrid working. Attachment theory is also discussed, with examples of how attachment styles such as secure, anxious-preoccupied, dismissive-avoidant and fearful-avoidant shape workplace behaviours and attitudes. Practical advice for encouraging reluctant employees to return to the office is provided. The chapter enables readers to understand the psychology underlying their team members’ preferences, leading to more effective hybrid workforce management.
