ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the journey of an English as a second language learner who elevated to senior leadership in higher education. Zavala-Acevez discusses the powerful pivotal moments that helped her activate and accumulate social and cultural capital to navigate the hidden agendas of college and career. Early survival tools of learning how to navigate structures without knowing English and applying such navigational tools, in addition to the power of perseverance, resiliency, and mentors, are explored and discussed.
