ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses how to begin the continuous improvement process by framing a problem of practice as an opportunity for adaptive change. Complex problems cannot be solved without being identified and defined. This chapter discusses a model for problem formulation that considers five major dimensions. Schools can develop a deeper understanding of the problem by unearthing assumptions and uncovering the “real” problem and by using epistemologies for equity. Leaders effectively facilitating efforts to focus on problem identification and framing results in more manageable, impactful, and successful improvement. Furthermore, the chapter discusses the tools used in the process for identifying the root causes of a problem and explores challenges in problem identification and framing as related to those five major dimensions.
