ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses global health, a field that addresses health issues, transcending national borders through interdisciplinary collaborations which synthesise population-based explanations and interventions. The chapter starts with a scenario about the activities of a migrant nurse, Titi, who observes similarities and differences in the role of a community health nurse in her home country, Nigeria, compared with the United Kingdom. The aim is to expound readers’ knowledge of global health issues and efforts designed to provide solutions for them. The chapter explores the impact of current and future global health challenges which influence health and social care. This includes healthcare workforce shortages, professional migration and its attendant consequences on the source and recipient countries; global disease threats such as pandemics, and common health challenges. Discussed are the consequences of human activities on the planet and climate change with its health sequela, including extreme weather conditions and increased ill-health. The chapter concludes with strategies to promote sustainable nursing practices to reduce air pollution, including incorporating green spaces into healthcare settings, engineering solutions, and appropriate use of single-use products in healthcare.
