ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces leadership and management in the context of nurse education. An anonymised scenario highlights some of the opportunities and challenges that arise in educational leadership. Nurse educators are role models to students and colleagues. They need to demonstrate management and leadership capabilities as they respond to the educational needs of students and the developmental needs of new lecturers. An overview of leadership types is presented including well established autocratic, democratic, and laissez-faire leadership. More recently developed perspectives are introduced which appear well suited to the context of nurse education. These include transactional, transformational and authentic leadership. Returning to the importance of educators as role models, we draw on literature relating to educational leadership. These approaches serve to nurture curiosity, humility, respect, and support the aspiration to excellence in health and social care.
