ABSTRACT

Jewell Parker Rhodes’s Ninth Ward provides a foundation for readers to investigate the social justice issue of environmental racism. Environmental disasters dramatically affect communities of color, and those same communities face disproportionate exposure to environmental hazards. This chapter argues that Ninth Ward can serve as a catalyst for exploring the complexities of environmental disaster through forms of restorying. Restorying is a reader-response framework that can be used to invite youth to create stories that acknowledge diverse experiences and highlight the need for justice initiatives to address harms caused by environmental racism.
