ABSTRACT

This chapter posits that Nalo Hopkinson’s Brown Girl in the Ring uses communities of care as a structure for modeling political activism and resistance. The chapter describes the ways communities form, deploy resources, and challenge racist and sexist power structures. The aim of this chapter is to encourage teachers to scaffold student understanding of antiracism, communities of care, and the novel itself to illustrate their relevance to real-world injustices and practices of communal and political organizing.
