ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that Tomi Adeyemi’s Children of Blood and Bone can be read as a counterstory, a story that centers marginalized people’s experiences and is pertinent to students’ engagement with ideas of equity and justice. A careful examination of Children of Blood and Bone can support antiracist pedagogy in high school contexts, creating spaces where students can create their own counternarratives, including graphic novels with empowered diverse characters.
