ABSTRACT
The purpose of this chapter is to suggest that teachers use a historical lens to teach Zetta Elliott’s novella Mother of the Sea, and it suggests that teachers emphasize the Middle Passage, the Black mermaid in fantasy fiction, the trickster within African American literature, slave revolts, and Black characters’ agency. Further, this chapter includes sample language arts lessons.
