ABSTRACT

This chapter presents several ideas for assessing the role of participation and its relationship to presidentialism in the new Latin American constitutionalism, 1 with particular emphasis on the case of Ecuador which, in 2008, enacted one of the most innovative constitutions in the region. It begins with a basic contextualization of the new Latin American constitutionalism, prior to analyzing the development of participation in Ecuador following the enactment of the Constitution. It then sets out to describe and critically analyze notable cases that have occurred in the years following the approval of the Constitution which, due to their importance, mirror structural tendencies.
