ABSTRACT

This chapter makes the case for the presence of theology in university structures. Its main thesis is based on the universalist nature of Christian theology. Theology is irrevocably characterised by this universalism, which comes directly from the originally universal orientation of Christianity as a religion. The university is largely the fruit of a relational vision of the world. The ontology of relation – as it is referred to here – is characterised by the creation of open and universal structures. This includes the space inherent in the sciences in their diversity. The interdisciplinarity that is so fashionable today should be considered as one of the variations of the open, universal structures of the originally Christian idea of relational universalism. For this reason, nowadays theology can play a significant role in the process of recovering a universal vision of knowledge and in building interdisciplinary relations between the various sciences.
