ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the current demise of theology in the European academy. Not unlike many other fields of study, the discipline itself needs to change if it is to maintain its presence in the university. How this is to be achieved, however, is not immediately obvious. Drawing on Bernhard Welte's work and insights from Pope Francis, a number of proposals are proffered with a view to securing a viable future for theology in a secularised cultural context. The chapter underscores the key reason for the decline of interest in theology from the perspective of cultural change and makes some concrete suggestions that might help in restoring the vitality of the discipline for a contemporary setting.
