ABSTRACT

The challenge to recontextualise theology in dialogue with the contemporary context remains more pressing than ever. This chapter offers a reconsideration of analysis presented more than 10 years ago on the current state of theology at the university, within the Church, and in society and culture. This analysis considered theology's ongoing marginalisation in these domains, advocating for a theology which, rather than being defensive or reactionary, deals with this marginalisation without resentment; a theology which, from the margins, self-confidently stands at the crossroads of university, Church and society, in dialogue with each of them. The current text argues that the main trend of this analysis and its conclusions still stands. Theology's location remains at the margins of university, Church and society, and more precisely at the crossroads where these three domains intersect. At the same time, because of evolution in university, society, and in the Church, the opportunities of such a location may have become more visible.
