ABSTRACT

Hannah Arendt's thought is the cornerstone of the work presented in this chapter. The chapter opens with a brief introduction to the person of Hannah Arendt. This is followed by an examination of her understanding of authentic education. Focus then shifts to her vision of the university as a refuge of truth, truthfulness, and truth-telling. The chapter argues that it is in a university thus conceived that theology, the theology which is a sacra doctrina, has a home. Furthermore, calling on the work of Josef Pieper, the argument is that for a university to be a university, the academic discipline of theology is of vital importance.
