ABSTRACT

Language production researchers aim to understand the representations and processes underlying language production, as well as how these processes are impacted by the social and discourse context. Testing these questions experimentally has challenges, in particular because it requires researchers to control the nonlinguistic idea that precedes production. This chapter reviews some of the experimental techniques that have been used to study language production, focusing on research questions about word production, sentence formulation, and the impact of the social and discourse context.
