ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a collaborative photography project where undergraduate students at the University of Michigan go inside a Michigan prison for workshops alongside men in the prison. Using the project as a case study, it explores ways to mitigate the power dynamics of collaborative projects in prison. The benefits and difficulties encountered are discussed from the perspectives of those who are incarcerated and those coming from the university. Particular attention is given to ways the leadership of those most directly impacted by the prison system is essential to a truly collaborative project.
