ABSTRACT

Focusing on an enchanted Colombian family amid emotional strife, the movie featured all the cinematic elements that Disney is renowned for, from striking visuals to catchy show tunes to affectively resonant narratives that children and adults alike find relatable. During this same period, Florida politicians Joe Harding and Dennis Baxley, both Republicans, introduced HB 1557 for consideration by the state legislature. Chapek officially changed course on March 9, at which point he tried to resolve the situation by privately apologizing to queer employees, providing confirmation that Disney would pause all political donations in Florida, and finally speaking publicly in opposition to the “Don’t Say Gay” bill during an annual shareholder’s meeting. At the time of writing, it is still difficult to quantify the long-term impact of the Disney Do Better campaign.
